Girona, Day 3

Tuesday is market day in the park near our hotel. So, we headed over there and with a little help from a couple of policemen) found the market. Men, just so you know, Jon and I upheld our honor and did NOT ask them for directions--Jeanne and Caroline did. The market was pretty amazing. It was huge and and had two major sections a food (mostly vegetables and fruits) and clothing.

The sellers ranged from large, commercial sellers to a few people selling what looks like the products of their gardens. The vendor on the left had a dozen ears of corn, some beets, and other vegetables. The meat and cheese stands have so much variety that I (Chuck) want to sample. I wanted to buy lots of things just to get a taste.

Here I am staring wistfully at the variety of sausages and cheeses that were on sale at one stand.

Once Jon and I saw the clothing stalls, we knew we were in for a longer visit than we had originally thought. The variety of people in market was amazing. It ranged from elderly people doing there shopping, well dressed people, young people,

people of all races and religions. It was a fun visit, and there were not many tourists there for sure.

After the visit to the market, we decided to drive over to the Mediterranean for lunch. We chose a closer place--it was about a 30 minute drive. Since it was Tuesday, the crowds at the beach were not nearly as large as they were when we went on Sunday. We found a nice place to have lunch, and enjoyed a walk on the beach.

After driving back to the hotel, we did a bit more museum visiting in Girona. The gals had not seen the Cathedral, so they went there. Jon and I went to the art museum. The art museum was mostly religious art from the 1300s and on. It was a great collection. We met at a little cafe at the base of the cathedral steps and had some refreshment and enjoyed the view of the cathedral.

Our last night in Girona ended with an early supper since we had a long drive the next day. We were on the road by 6:50, and arrived in Paris at the airport at about 5 PM. We turned in the car and were safely ensconced in our hotels by 7 PM.  The trip back to Paris took 9 hours.  We have driven 2000 miles!

Jeanne was a trooper and helped with the driving. (Jeanne says you can't see the look of determination/terror/concern on my face!) Carol says:  Caroline was not a trooper because she doesn't drive a stick shift. :-). We went over the  Masif Central which is a beautiful part of south central France.
