Paris, Thursday part 2

After a nice rest, J&J came to our room to make a Skype phone call. Here is a picture of C&C's hotel room. Not very roomy, but it is fine for sleeping and bathing.

We are on the 7th floor in our hotel. Below is a view from our hotel room. I heard once that there is a law in Paris that new construction has to be under 7 stories. There are some glaring exceptions to that rule as you can see, but for the most part, the city has no tall buildings.

Our itinerary for the evening was a visit to Notre Dame, a concert at Sainte Chapelle, and supper.

The picture of the "birds" was outside Notre Dame. Notre Dame was awesome as usual. And as an added bonus, we happened to be there during a mass. It is a bit odd to walking around the church with hundreds of other tourists with a mass in progress in the background. I took a short movie from the beginning of the mass. Click on the right point triangle below the movie to view it (and have the sound turned up).

It was near sunset when we were in the cathedral and Caroline took this picture.

Our next stop was Sainte Chapelle on the same island that Notre Dame is on. In 1239, Louis IX bought the supposed crown of thorns from Christ's crucifixion and other relics. He built Sainte Chapelle to house them. It cost about one third the price he paid for the relics. The link has some great pictures.

The concert we heard was a small ensemble consisting of 3 violins, a viola, a cello, and a clavecin. The pieces were by Handel (Sarabande), Albinoni (Adagio), and Vivaldi (The Four Seasons). The musicians were incredible, especially the

lead violinist, Bertrand Cervera. The music combined with the setting made for a magical evening that was enjoyed by all, and especially by Jon.

The day ended with pizza or pasta at La Mamas.
