Costa Maya and the ruins

Costa Maya was an entirely different story than Belize. The day started with a gorgeous sunrise; that was a good omen for the rest of the day.

The port was prettier, cleaner, and nicer over all. The day was clear, and cool (for Costa Maya) with a high temperature of about 80. Perfect weather for some sightseeing.

We did a tour to some Mayan ruins. There are many Mayan ruins in the area, many of them have not even been excavated. We went to a site that has been partially excavated and preserved. Our guide

told us that the Mayans have not disappeared like is sometimes said, but that they are a part of the current population. He is quarter Mayan, and his wife is half Mayan. He was quite proud of the Mayan culture and history. This is a picture of a temple. The outside was originally covered with stucco and painted bright colors.

This is a public ceremonial building. The thatched area is where the ruler would sit to observe the ceremonies.

Caroline sitting next to the thatched structure.

Another ruin.

Before boarding the ship we had lunch at an outdoor cafe. This was the view from our table.
