Thursday: BCI from a boat

When we were finished with the hike (I, Chuck, was soaked from the top of my head to mid thigh from sweat and my core body temperature was way up. (Temp. 97 as well as the humidity) So a cool shower and a cold beer were just one small step from heaven. After lunch and a very nice nap, we boarded the boats and took a trip along the shore of the island looking for wildlife. We were rewarded with some great sights. (Caroline) After Chuck's 3 mile trek through the rain forest he was so hot he said he felt like jumping in the water to cool off. It takes physicists a little longer to heed warning signs about the crocodiles,  I guess.  Jeanne, Jon, and I chose the mile and a half trek.

AgoutiLand
LizardOnLog

This lizard was enjoying a shady spot on a log just off the water.

Turkey

Our guide said it was very unusual to see this Crested Guan on the ground.
We got quite close to it and it was very unconcerned but never moved. It looks a bit like wild turkey.

CrocCropped

After seeing this specimen, we understood the warning sign about crocodiles. That is a row of nasty teeth. We saw others including juveniles in the waters, but this one was by far the most photogenic. Our guide told us that people have been dragging their arms in the water off a boat and had their arms bitten off!

Gawkers

This was the other boat of gawkers looking at something.

Monkey

One of a small group of howler monkeys that we saw.

SnailKite

There were a group of "snail kites" soaring above the island. Snails were apparently imported to the lake to control a non-native grass. The birds were ineffective and became pests in the lake. However, the snail kites found the snails and have now effectively controlled them.

AgoutiLand

We saw many agouti's on our hike.  We saw this one from the boat.  They are small rodents.

AgoutiWater

Much to our surprise (and our guides) we saw swimming from BCI to another small island 100 yards away. His little feet were paddling away. He came right up to the boat seemingly looking for a ride. Caroline was quite concerned for the little guy.s
