Beatrix Potter and sheep

We had a wonderful day in the Lake District on Monday. We had originally planned to do these trips on Tuesday, but changed our mind based on the weather forecast. At the end of the day it was a great decision since we had a wonderful day.

It started at Hill Top where Beatrix Potter lived for most of her life. If you have seen the movie Miss Potter, you will have some idea of what it looks like. As it turns out the movie was filmed at another location, but it looks quite similar. It was a beautiful small house with a garden.

The house was very interesting (no pictures allowed) and the garden was beautiful.

One interesting sidelight was that there were lots of oriental tourists. There were enough that some of the signs were in Japanese. It was similar to the experience on Prince Edward Island and the Anne of Green Gables house. Apparently both the Beatrix Potter books and the Anne of Green Gable books are commonly read in Japan.

We continued on to Hawkshead, a small village where there was a small gallery of Potter's art and shops and cafes. After figuring out the Pay and Display parking area, we wandered around the village, got a cup of coffee and a pastry, saw the museum, and shopped a little. Then we wandered up to the church to see what time the organ concert that we saw advertised started.

The church was very old; worship has been conducted on the site since the 1500s or so. Inside it was clearly an operating church, not like many of the churches you see in France which are pretty much just museums.

We found a path leading away from the church and wandered back that way. We followed the signs that said Public Footpath

through the fields. It was just beautiful. The fields were all full of sheep.

Fortunately, they were pacifists and we were not menaced by any aggressive sheep. <grin>. The views were wonderful; pictures can't do them justice.
