Wordsworth

After lunch on Monday, we went to Grasmere to see Dove Cottage where Wordsworth lived for several years. The tour was quite interesting. Much of the furniture in the cottage was original. The house was small and after the family grew to 6 (Wordsworth, his wife, his sister, and 3 children, they moved to another nearby village. Dove Cottage was where he wrote much of his famous poetry. The garden behind the cottage was quite beautiful, and had a view from the top.

Neither of us are big poetry fans, so I was not familiar with one of Wordsworth's most poems, the Dafodils. Here is a picture of the first verse of the poem.

When I saw the poem, it explained the sign I had seen on a pub earlier in the day.

We finished our day of sightseeing by wandering over to Grasmere, a very picturesque village.

It would have been nice to have had a bit more time there. We had been told that if we were in Grasmere, we had to go to Sarah Nelson's Gingerbread shop. Since we know a young lady named Sarah Nelson, we just had to go there and try some. There was a line to get into the very small shop and pretty much all they sold was gingerbread. We tried some and it was quite good, delicious. It is too bad that we couldn't bring some home with us.

We ended the day by walking down to Bowness and had a nice Italian dinner.

A long, but very nice day.
