The one bad thing about this trip is the length of time it takes to get from Colorado to South Africa. Last time we flew from Denver to Atlanta and then non-stop to J-burg. This year the group decided to make our own flight arrangements and meet in J-burg. So, Caroline and I chose to fly a United itinerary because of the status I acquired after years of business travel on United. We left home about 6:30 AM on Tuesday. Our first flight was from Denver to Washington Dulles. We look pretty bright eyed and bushy tailed in this selfie we took in Dulles
We then flew from Dulles to Accra, Ghana on South African Air (code shared with United). By the way, for some reason I thought the intermediate stop was in Dakar, Senegal. Instead it was Accra. The flight from Dulles to Accra was 10 hours, mostly over night. After dinner, both of us actually got a few hours of sleep.
We did not get off the plane in Accra. Some passengers deplaned, the plane was cleaned, the galley replenished, and other passages got on. We left for J-burg after about an hour. That flight is about 5 hours long. So, 3 hours from COS to DC, 10 from DC to Accra, and 5 from Accra to J-burg—18 hours in airplanes.
Our arrival in J-burg at 5:00 PM Wednesday was uneventful. Changed some dollars to rand, got our luggage, found a taxi, fought rush hour traffic, and got to our abode for the night at about 6:30. We ordered some Indian food for delivery which was quite tasty. After staying up as late as we could, off to bed. We both slept well.
