Monday was a gorgeous day in Stockholm. We spent the morning replacing a piece of luggage that had a zipper meltdown in York with a final demise in Stockholm. (sorry Kim) Our first stop was the NK store (the Swedish equivalent of Nordstroms). The suitcase we liked was over $1,000 and we thought that was a bit steep. Then we went to Åhleans (more like a Macys) and there we found some that were in the few hundred dollar range. In the end we bought a large black suitcase in our price range.
After lunch we met my cousin and her family for a boat ride to Waxholm,
an island in the archipelago. In the picture, Anna, Janne, Märta, and Lisa. Waxholm is an old fortress that was part of the protective ring around Stockholm. It dates from the early 16th century.
There was a museum inside that we toured which was quite interesting. There were exhibits about the fortress, and the navy and how they protected the city. Of particular interest were the old mines they showed and the control equipment for arming them. We toured the women's military wing which reminded Caroline of her Air Force military days
(Lisa
joined her in trying on the combat helmet).
The boat ride to Waxholm was also beautiful. The route must have been the major shipping route to Stockholm. We saw several very large ferries and cruise ships passing. The one we were on had to slow down to let it pass (good judgment on our Captain's part since we would have lost in a collision).
We ended the day by eating with Anna's father and his wife at their apartment in the Stockholm suburb Bromma.
