In the morning we saw a surfer out enjoying the big waves. He was towed out to the waves by a jet ski who also got him up to speed before he started surfing.
On the right is what I would call a millipede.
After breakfast we got into the van for a trip to a coffee plantation call Beaver Creek Coffee Estate. There is a ski area with the same name in Colorado and we found out that one of the owner’s family lived in Beaver Creek. We had a short tour of how coffee is grown, harvested, separated from the berries, dried, and roasted. Growing and harvesting good coffee is a labor intensive process with many steps. Remember that the next time you complain about the cost of your cup of Starbucks.
Then we got to taste the coffee and had a nice lunch. The coffee was wonderful and many of us brought some to bring home.
Pictures from the coffee plantation.
A berry from a coffee tree. Two coffee beans from inside the berry.
I chewed on on the beans a bit and it didn’t taste a bit like coffee.
The machine that extracts the beans from the berries. Drying the beans in the sun (it takes many days)
We went directly from the coffee plantation to the school where the kids were waiting for us. We go the usual enthusiastic welcome and help carrying our stuff from the van to the school. Here are some pictures from day 3.
The door to the art class room was locked so art was held outside.
In science we talked about propulsion and how rockets worked. It was huge success. I’m guessing some of the rockets over 50 feet in the air. We also had them shoot for distance and one went over 100 feet.
Building the rockets. Getting ready to launch the rockets.
