Zadar, Croatia. Nov. 12

Zadar is at the north end of Croatia. It is an ancient city with Roman ruins, medieval churches, and a walled city. As a result the city is not a museum-like town like Dubrovnik for example.

Zadar was bombed by the Allies 72 times in WWII. And, during the Serbian Croatia war in the 1990s it was shelled by Serb guns. This resulted in old buildings and modern ones. Therefore the city does not have the charm of other very old cities.

Still it was a fun city to walk around, take pictures, shop a little, sample the local bakery, and have a pizza for lunch.

On our drive to the city on a shuttle bus, we saw lots and lots of boats of all sizes. Everyone in the city must own a boat.

There were lots churches in Zadar. The picture on right is a complex of religious building with Roman ruins in the foreground.

There was minimal auto traffic in the old city which is so nice. There were wide streets and narrow streets. Most of the shops were on the wider streets.

Here are a couple of pictures of apartment complexes. Some are modern and look nice (left). Others are much more stark (right). I love the improvised laundry line.

The tourist season is nearly over in Zadar so some things were closing down. Still, it was a fun place to walk around.
