At Sea, Dance Contest

CarolBefore

The highlight of the day at sea between Stockholm and Arhus, Denmark was the dance contest. Caroline and Mary signed up for the country line dance team. They had practiced several times with the dance instructors. They practiced on their own as well. They practiced walking down the sidewalk, waiting for elevators on the ship, and down the hallways. I am sure they practiced in their sleep. Caroline even practiced on the verandah as you can see in the movie below.. As show time approached I could sense her getting nervous. (Well, of course we were nervous.  The stage is huge and the lights are extremely bright, not to mention the crowd of about 500 people staring at you and, we only had a few real practice times!!) On the right, she is dressed and ready to do the Boot Scoot Boogie.

At the show, they were the first up and did a great job. The other three groups were waltz, east coast swing, and street dance. After all four had performed, the judges (Sue Scott, Vern Sutton, and Trisha Ward) deliberated and choose their top two. In the first show it was the east coast swing and country. So, they performed a second time and the judges deliberated and choose the swing dancers for first and country second.

In the second show, the swing team was not allowed to win again. Once again, the judges picked the top 2. This time it was the waltzers and country teams who got to do a reprise. This time the waltzers won. But Caroline and Mary were quite pleased that they had finished second both times. And, they were even happier when they received a small cash prize for both finishes. Here is an excerpt from one of their 4 performances. Be patient as this may take a while to download.

The ocean has been quite rocky at times.  Caroline said it took somef concentration dancing and trying not to sway with the ship!
