Oslo Day 2

Park

All of the guidance from fellow travelers, web sites, and other sources said a visit to Vigeland Park was mandatory. Being the compliant people we are, we set out for the park in the morning of day 2. We were not disappointed and would agree it is a must visit in Oslo.

From the web site linked to above: "The Vigeland Park is the world's largest sculpture park made by a single artist, and is one of Norway's most popular tourist attractions. The unique sculpture park is Gustav Vigeland's lifework with more than 200 sculptures in bronze, granite and wrought iron. Vigeland was also in charge of the design and architectural layout of the park. The Vigeland Park was mainly completed between 1939 and 1949.”

Words are not capable of describing the park. Here are some pictures, worth at least 1,000 words.

Racing boys. No clothing on any of the statues                        Man & infants. Notice the picnickers in the background

Artist AngryBaby

A statue of the artist. No respect from the birds.                           An angry child. I’ve seen this look before.

All in all, a wonderful place. I’m sure volumes have been written about his subjects and why he chose them. Whatever the motivation, the sheer scale and artistry of the park is something to see. We enjoyed it.

We hailed a cab and through we asked to go the museum with Munch’s “The Scream” which is in the National Gallery. We ended up at the Munch museum which apparently has one of the 4 versions, but it was not on display. We did enjoy seeing the body of his work. Here is an example. You can see hints of the The Scream in the style.

Another fine day in Oslo.
