Aug. 18: At Sea

Thursday was spent moving from Ketchikan to Juneau with a slow sail into and back from a glacier. As we sailed toward the glacier there were lots of waterfalls on both sides from melting snow and ice in the hills above. As you an see from the pictures, it was not a great day. I (Chuck) stood on the top deck for an hour or so watching, taking pictures, and getting pretty cold. But, it was worth it.

We got to within a few hundred feet of the glacier. Smaller boats got even closer.

Several hunks of ice fell off the front (calving) and we saw the effects in the water. But, I wasn’t able to capture that on film.

Caroline: After seeing the movie “Titanic" years ago, I have been fearful of icebergs and going to places where they exist. The iceberg below, however, is quite harmless. I took the picture from our veranda. They seem to glow with all the reflections around them. On my very first cruise they were playing the Titanic movie at the theater! Some one had a wry sense of humor!  We were supposed to go to Tracy Arms today but there was too much ice for our cruise ship to safely travel there. Alaska is beautiful even with the clouds and mist, and the villages are quaint and scenic.
