Naples

27 August, 2013. We were very tired after our excursion to Rome so we chose not go to Pompeii or Herculaneum, the two cities buried by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. I read that Mt Vesuvius is under pressure and some day will blow up again and that 3 million people are at risk. The last eruption was 500 years ago. The locals seem to be quite blasé about the risk; some of them live at the base of Vesuvius.

We were docked quite near a Norwegian Cruise ship called the Epic. People on that ship said there were 5,000 passengers (compared to the 1,200 or so on our ship). We think our ship is big. We can't imagine being on a ship with 3.5 times as many people. In the picture, our ship is on the right and the Epic is on the left. You can get a sense of the difference in scale.

We did take a stroll into Naples for lunch. It is the place where pizza originated so it seemed appropriate to eat pizza there. On the way we saw this old fort. That is about as much history as we were ready for—a couple of pictures of an old building <grin>.

We found a nice restaurant for lunch and had good pizza. Caroline, Suzanne, Cynthia, Mary and Katy. (I call them my harem)

Here are a couple of pictures from our exploration of a very small part of Naples.

SideStreet TrainStation

A side street in the old part of town.                            A shopping area in what looks like a converted train station.
