Havana Cars

It is well known that Cubans have kept there American cars from the 1950s (some in the 40’s) until now because there were no other American cars available. There were lots of Russian cars of dubious value, especially esthetic value. Many of the 1950s cars are showing their age, but some of them are pristine with all original parts. Here are some pictures of American cars in varying degrees of maintenance.

On our last night in Havana we were treated to a ride from our hotel to the restaurant in classic cars. We rode in a 1959 Chevy that was in beautiful shape. The co-owner of the group of cars was our driver. She and her husband restore these cars with all original parts that they somehow import from the US. When Chuck was in high school, his family had a 1959 Chevy. It was not nearly as fancy as this one, but I remember the inside. We were amazed at how big it was. You could easily sit 4 adults in the back. It would be tight but not out of the question.

Here are some more pictures of cars we saw in Havana. Some less well maintained ...

… and some well maintained beauties. Often you would see a few of the well maintained cars near tourist attractions. You could rent them for a tour of the city or a taxi ride.
